What is biohazard cleanup?
Biohazard cleanup is the removal and disinfection of material that can carry disease, such as blood, other body fluids, used needles and sewage. It is needed after an unattended death, a crime, a suicide, an accident, or in a home affected by hoarding. A private cleanup company does the work once police or the death investigation office have released the home.
Who cleans up after someone dies at home in Washington?
The family, landlord or property owner hires a private cleanup company to clean the home. The county medical examiner or coroner investigates the death and takes care of the person who died, but does not clean the home. Cleanup starts after that office and the police, if they are involved, release the home.
Does homeowners insurance cover biohazard cleanup?
Homeowners insurance sometimes covers biohazard cleanup, but it depends on the policy. Call your insurer early and ask what your policy includes. You can also ask the cleanup company whether it will work with your insurer directly.

Can I clean up blood myself after a family member dies?
It is safer not to. Blood and other body fluids can carry germs that household cleaners may not kill, and fluids can soak into carpet, padding and drywall where they cannot be wiped away. A cleanup company has the protective equipment and disposal methods for this work.
